Who I'd like to meet:
FAIRFIELD, CALIF. — A WOMAN WAS KILLED AND SIX OTHERS WERE WOUNDED IN A TARGETED SHOOTING FRIDAY NIGHT AT A SPIRIT HALLOWEEN STORE INSIDE FAIRFIELD’S SOLANO TOWN CENTER. POLICE ARE STILL SEARCHING FOR THE SUSPECT.
THE WOMAN WHO DIED WAS IDENTIFIED BY POLICE AS 31-YEAR-OLD CONSTANCE HAGES. HER FAMILY TOLD POLICE SHE WAS PREGNANT WHEN SHE WAS KILLED.
THE OTHER SIX VICTIMS WERE MEN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 16 AND 43. THREE OF THEM WERE TEENAGERS.
THE SHOOTING LEFT EMPLOYEES AND SHOPPERS SHAKEN, INCLUDING MELANIE GAINEY, WHO WAS FINISHING HER SHIFT AS A CLEANER AT THE FUNTASTIC ARCADE INSIDE THE MALL FRIDAY NIGHT WHEN PEOPLE BEGAN RUNNING IN FEAR.
GAINEY SAID SHE BECAME CONCERNED WHEN SHE SAW PEOPLE FLEEING AND DECIDED TO TAKE SHELTER.
"i figured something had to have been wrong. i got a little scared. i went through the back door, and i locked myself in the supply closet," gainey said.
she said a security guard later told her it was safe to come out. gainey quickly finished cleaning and walked outside to head home, where she encountered swat officers. police searched gainey and asked her several questions before allowing her to leave.
"they had guns drawn, asking me to put my hands up, asking me to walk forward," gainey said.
but she soon learned that her 15-year-old daughter had been inside the spirit halloween store that night and had left just 20 minutes before the shooting.
"it was very scary. very scary … but i'm just relieved that we're ok. and today i'm just praying for the victims that weren't so lucky. it's awful," gainey said.
fairfield police said investigators believe the shooting was targeted and that one suspect was inside the store. police are still searching for that person.
the spirit halloween store remained closed saturday, but shoppers returned to the mall as they tried to process what happened.
"it's a tragic, it's an awful thing to happen especially on the day before halloween. this is for children," shopper jaimi savino said.
fairfield mayor rick vaccaro said he is in constant contact with police and urged residents to stay safe, enjoy the holiday weekend and support one another as the investigation continues.
"fairfield's greatest strength is how we all look out for each other. i urge everyone in our community to support one another," vaccaro said.
police are reviewing mall surveillance footage and asking the public to share any information or video that could help investigators identify the suspect.
